'was not born to follow' - carole king wrote it, her version here birds did it on the easy rider soundtrack, already posted theirs earlier in the thread. and dusty springfield did it alan price too - not on youtube sadly. i love this song.

glad you breezed in and sparked the life back in here, jazznick - much appreciated. Abdullah Ibrahim formerly known as Dollar Brand grew up in Cape Town where native hymns were played alongside American Gospel and jazz. Duke Ellington's music struck Ibrahim even as a child and it had a big impact on his own style. Like Duke and Thelonious Monk, Ibrahim music is complex even at its simplest. Ibrahim moved to New York and spent the latter half of the '60s working with cutting edge jazz innovators. In 1968, he converted to Islam and the effect on his music was immediate. Since that time the African influence on his small and large groups has been enormous. His playing became unique in the world of jazz and African music. With the end of Apartheid, Abdullah Ibrahim is now free to travel between North America, Europe, and South Africa. His music has never known such borders. i first came across a much longer rendition of manenberg (suburb of cape town) in 1970. think it played for a good 10-15 minutes if my memory serves me well.

yes it is beautiful. i first came across it on desert island discs a long time ago and cant remember whose. but i do remember what a mission it was trawling brighton's music shops for the kings rendition - long before the days of internet shopping. as well as christian, apples are a pagan symbol as is the tree of life. kabbalahnames.com/tree-of-lifeh2g2.com/dna/h2g2/A87728223
