I had one with me all the while I was raking the leaves yesterday. Within two feet! When I went into the next door garden he was there again, right in front of me at head height only inches away. Incredibly tame. I heard a story the other day about why robins are so tame. Can't remember it just now. Will try to recall.

Here it is "Robins are shy birds throughout most of their range but in the British Isles, they have acquired a charming tameness and are frequent, honored guests in back yard gardens, and parks. Their feeding behavior historically involved following foraging animals such as the wild boar as it dug through the soil. The robin would hop down to pick up any insects and grubs that were uncovered by the animals digging. Now, robins have found gardeners to be as productive with their earth-turning as wild boars and robins are known to be not far behind a human digging in the garden." animals.about.com/od/passerine1/p/europeanrobin.htm
