There is speculation that he fell off the roof and into a ha-ha that was 30-40 metres deep.

30-40 meters is over a 100ft. that would be one hell of a deep ha-ha but it fits with the length of the scream which sounded more like he fell of a skyscraper.
but a haha that deep is hard to imagine. i wonder then if the 30-40meters was the full distance from the roof to the bottom of the trench.
i quite liked how the quiet drama played out where we were expecting it to be Helen and/or her baby (glad they're ok) and then subtly sidelined to the roof top scenario. nicely done i thought.

Did everyone hear the interview on R4 this morning with the actor who played Nigel?
(Or do I have to go and look for a link?)

i can understand the reason for bumping Nigel off had he wanted to leave, but hearing the interview it is clear that he didn't want to go. getting rid of him is not just a waste of a good character but it really is an appallingly shabby way to treat someone who has been with the programme for the last 30 years.
Nigel Seed has lost his job merely to create an "impact because Nigel was so polular". such callous and shallow regard towards a employee* is shameful.
i don't know why but i had somehow credited the programme makers, and the BBC, with more integrity.
* i realise he is likely to have been a 'self employed' actor but really that is just a technicality.

Look, pippa, the actor's name is Graham (or maybe Graeme), not Nigel (the clue is in 'actor'). And he's probably been paid to be part of the post-publicity-keep-it-bubbling-for-as-long-as-we-can-get-away-with-it ploy. In other words, you don't have to take him under your wing and keep telling everyone else they're piling in on him when he's the dog's bollox and bee's knees. We just can't take it any more! Archers, Barchers! Oops, that didn't do it ... (Cripes, the bally fellow didn't even realise he talked like Gussy Finknottle!)

Forgive my ignorance, but does (did) Nigel talk like Gussie Finknottle?
If so, then the actor (whatever his name) is possibly not a very good actor and deserves to be unemployed, at least until they adapt some more P G Wodehouse for radio.
