I was listening to a programme, which said a lot of the alcohol in Christmas cakes evaporates, so unless you putting your last lot of brandy on just before serving, the kids should be alright.

...a lot of the alcohol in Christmas cakes evaporates... What's the point of putting it in, then? My cake turned out not only dry but quite hard. The brandy seemed to be improving the texture nicely, but if it's all going to evaporate I might as well have used water!

I am sure most of the alcohol does evaporate, but the flavour is most certainly left behind. I can certainly tell the difference between a temperance cake and a normal one, and can also tell if someone has used black treacle. Yuk
As for it being dry, at the risk of a mere male suggesting they know a bit about cooking I will put my oar in.
With a rich fruit cake it is pointless to stick a skewer in and see if it comes out sticky. It will up to the point the cake is dry.
If yours was dry I suspect it was either cooked too long, or the temperature was too high, or even the tin could be the wrong profile.
So, make a Mk 2 Jean!
