A UKIP devotee has encountered some derision after tweeting that the BBC's announcement of Nigel's intention to stand in Thanet was intentionally filmed in front of a mosque

What you may think is Isamic architecture in spirit, nay, is actually copied from the Byzantine Church of Holy Wisdom in Constantinople built in 537 by Christians, long before Islam ever raised its ugly head in the region and predating the mosques subsequently built in "Istanbul" after the fall of Constantinople by nearly a millennium.

The builders of the modern cathedral you posted above probably knew more about the history of Christian architecture than you do, I'm afraid, nay.

Anyone who knows anything about architecture knows that there are many features shared by both Byzantine and Islamic varieties.

No, it was cultural ignorance on the part of the Kippers who did not recognise one of the most famous Christian churches in the country.

When I went to Palma Cathedral, I was amazed at the amount of Islamic-influenced art inside it.

As I understand it, Christians razed most of the mosque on the site in symbolic triumph over the Muslims, but still used most of the remaining Islamic building for
Christian worship for many years. And built the cathedral around it.

I don't think I've ever seen such a beautiful building managing to show such respect to both religions. And me an atheist, or agnostic at least.

But the Byzantine Christian Architecture came FIRST in that particular chronology and the model for it was the Church of Holy Wisdom in Constantinople which was widely copied by the Turkish mosque architects for its beauty even though it was nearly a thousand years old by the time Constantinople fell. It was, of course, based on the Roman semi-circular arch that was ubiquitous around the Mediterranean courtesy of the Roman Empire and an improvement on the more limited lintel and column space spanning construction of the Greek World that preceded it.

Subsequent muslim architects copied Roman/Byzantine architecture and later also introduced the pointed arch which permitted more flexibility in design than the semi-circular arch of the previous Roman tradition. I would assume that the pre-Islamic conquest Christian churches of Portugal and Spain were also Roman/Romanesque in style though I haven't looked into it. Another guess is that the subsequent development from Christian Romanesque architecture in Europe into more graceful Gothic came courtesy of the pointed arch which was a borrowing from Islamic architecture.

The Greeks and Romans came first - does that mean we have to downgrade all those Renaissance architects who copied and developed theeir styles?

I mention all the above because it is a common misconception that the mosques of Istanbul are "Islamic" architecture when they are, in fact, close copies of the greatest Christian Basilica ever built - The Church of Holy Wisdom completed in 537, nearly a millennium before the Turks occupied Constantinople.

Of course, you won't find muslims or the politically correct apologists for them conceding (or even KNOWING) this. Sadly Byzantium is largely ignored in the West and probably forgotten by most Turks and that is why Byzantine "style" architecture (like Westminster Cathedral) is mistaken for the many subsequent Islamic "omages" to Hagia Sofia - whether it be by UKIP spokesmen or anyone else.
