Turkey will never become a member of the EU - Cameron knows that and what he says is probably said out of diplomacy
Turkey will not become and EU member because: 1. Greece will simply say no. The hatred of Greece toward Turkey still burns fiercely with stark memories of the horrors of the Turkish occupation of Greece and the massacres and burnings of the beautiful city of Izmir. With some justification, Greece regards the Turks as a nation of savages 2. Turkey still denies the well-documented genocide of the Armenians - any civilised state will reject a country that performed such abomination and has no remorse for doing so 3. Turkey is rapidly becoming de-secularised approaching an Islamic state. The EU could not countenance having an extremely conservative anti-liberal Islamic state as a member state 4. The Turkish armed forces are also a political force - this is anathema to the Western way of (so-called) democracy 5. Turkey currently occupies by force an EU member state! 6. Even if the above were not true, to allow Turkey, with its 70 million Moslems free movement into the historically Christian European countries would be cultural suicide - disregarding the steady advancement toward cultural suicide in most European countries to which the bien-pensants turn a 'liberal' blind eye. But then the liberal-left is notorious for containing the seeds of its own destruction, and self-destruct it will regardless of Turkey's accession

Turkey? Ukraine? The EU bureaucrats don't care about the quality so long as they can extend their Empire.
The sooner we get out the better.
