There is very interesting article in today's Telegraph by the respected political commentator Peter Oborne
He questions whether the EU, in its current form is close to collapse (yes, this question has been asked many times over the last 5 years and that it yet staggers on with the question unanswered yet evermore pertinent)
www.telegraph.co.uk/news/worldnews/europe/eu/11286161/The-euro-is-heading-for-disaster-what-luck-for-David-Cameron.html
His points:
1. The Euro cannot succeed without political unity and its implementation has been disastrous for Spain (youth unemployment 50%), Italy (economy moribund, social cohesion vanished)and Greece (economy shrunk by 30%)
2. In the attempt to regain control over the Euro zone the EU Apparatchicks do not hesitate to ride rough shod over democracy and appoint their own bureaucrats in place of elected leaders ( Greece, Italy)
3. He castigates the 'bone-headednes' of those that advocated the Euro-zone, listing those British alumni that forecast disaster for Britain if we did not join: Hesseltine, Mandelson (this serpentine creature still advocates Britain joining the Euro - but then his fat EU pension is conditional upon his continued support for the EU), Blair, Clarke, Clegg - indeed nearly all those British politicians that have done so little for British democracy
4. The rise and rise throughout Europe of far-right and far -left political parties in protest against the anti-democratic liberal-left cozy bureaucratic elite that is the EU
5. On Monday it was announced hat soon France and Italy will be in breach of their fiscal limits (any nation in breach of the fiscal limit will be fined 0.1% of their GDP - a lovely recipe for assisting such nations to meet their fiscal limits- with France it is unimportant as they simply disregard any EU fines and of course Italy will pay eventually, perhaps...)
6. In order to support the Euro-zone the ECB - European Central Bank is racking up enormous debts, and eventually the EU taxpayer must meet the cost of this -prepare for howls of anguish
7. Hopes that economic growth will float the Eurozone have been trashed by forecasts of stagnation from the ECB
8. Greece is now ungovernable and consequently has seen the biggest crash in the Greek Stock Exchange in 27 years
9. Oborne predicts that soon Italy and Greece will leave the Eurozone
10 He ses the formation of a core political Eurozone EU consisting of the Benelux, France , Germany and perhaps the Nordic countries where the Euro would work under the total political domination of Germany. Other countries would be outside this Euro Zone , keep their own sovereignty, and have full trading rights with the core EU and between themselves - rather like the original picture of the EEC presented to the British in 1975
11. In other words Oborne predicts the EU will reform itself to survive and indeed the reformation will meet all of Britain's requirements!
