news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/uk/8447262.stmit always bugs me when people hold up severe cold weather/recent bad summers as an indication that global warming is a myth. of course global warming will mean far more of this for the UK - in our life time i suspect that we should expect lots more of the same.

Thirty years ago this weather would have been considered pretty normal, though disruptive. Now it is spun as abnormal and a sign of increased weather volatility.
I don't buy that, any more than I buy heatwaves as an "anthropogenic" signal.
It is pathetically easy to assert but no-one has come anywhere close to providing evidence that this variability is down to CO2. Until they do I'm sceptical!

it always bugs me when people hold up severe cold weather/recent bad summers as an indication that global warming is a myth. It cuts both ways,Bets. There are plenty of people who hold up a hot summer or mild winter as absolute proof of man-made global warming.

5th January 2010
Young Simon is telling the Cbeebies that snow is a "very rare event" but he's nobbut a lad is, he? And the kiddies have even LESS experience of normal weather variation. I call this sort of "news" abuse of the innocence of the young! and I include Simon himself in that category!
I ws born at the end of March 1947 after three months of arctic weather. My pregnant mum had to wear socks over her boots when venturing out on the ice.
I had a sledge as a kid, made by my dad, like all my pals, and we used them nearly every year.
Weather "normality" covers quite a wide range of variation over time, let's not forget that, Simon.

I interpreted bets' post as "ironical", sin.
After all, EVERY conceivable variant on the weather is now proclaimed as an AGW signal, isn't it?
When EVERYTHING is proof NOTHING is proof, according to my understanding of the scientific method.

I interpreted bets' post as "ironical", sin. Well perhaps it was,Marchesa. Trouble is,I'm rather snowed under(as it were)by "experts" blustering that one cold winter proves nothing.I think I must be suffering from "white out" ;D
