That is an exceptionally cute polar bear cub. Can you explain the relevance to Climate? This is a climate blog and not just a private scrapbook I believe? Here's a good start - The National Wildlife Federation (Canada) www.nwf.org/Global-Warming/Effects-on-Wildlife-and-Habitat/Polar-Bears.aspx"The chief threat to the polar bear is the loss of its sea ice habitat due to global warming. As suggested by its specific scientific name (Ursus maritimus), the polar bear is actually a marine mammal that spends far more time at sea than it does on land. It is on the Arctic ice that the polar bear makes its living, which is why global warming is such a serious threat to its well-being. How are polar bears affected? •Population sizes decreasing •Sea ice platforms moving farther apart and swimming conditions more dangerous •Fewer hunting opportunities and increased scarcity of food As climate change melts sea ice, the U.S. Geological Survey projects that two thirds of polar bears will disappear by 2050. This dramatic decline in the polar bear is occurring in our lifetime, which is but a miniscule fraction of the time polar bears have roamed the vast Arctic seas."

This is Marchesa's Climate Blog and I am the board's Global Warming Consultant - so I include on my blog anything I like.

This is Marchesa's Climate Blog and I am the board's Global Warming Consultant - so I include on my blog anything I like. Get used to it. To take this point by point: 1) "This is Marchesa's" - I hadn't realised that this was a private forum. An open invitation was issued on the R4 Science board. I accepted the invitation. 2) "Climate Blog" - I have posted material relating to the climate, I questioned what relevance the polar bear cub had to climate and included some relevant material to start the ball rolling. 3) "I am the board's Global Warming Consultant" - I'm trying to consult you. I have asked a number of specific questions which you have ignored. 4) "so I include on my blog anything I like" - so it is in fact a private scrapbook. You seem to think that I am despoiling it with my nasty science. Is this against board rules? 5) "Get used to it" - I really don't know that it's worth the effort. I began posting here to try to show some balance to your very one-sided views. I think this is a worthwhile use of some of my time. However, your refusal to engage in debate is very wearying.

Ah, I get it - polar bears are dangerous carnivores and therefore we should be doing all we can to wipe them out - including melting the arctic ice that they depend on. Is that the message you're trying to get across on this 'Climate Blog'?
If I've misunderstood, perhaps you could explain?

"Adopt an animal with WWF from as little as £3.00 a month and help protect your selected species and their habitat. Choose from 10 animals which are perfect as a Charity Gift as they come with a gift pack and cuddly toy!" "Act now. Adopt now. Adopt a Svalbard polar bear. With your continual support we can do more to help the polar bear in its struggle for survival." Er, no! But you'll make a wealthy NGO even richer! - Rank commercialism cashing in on the naive and ignorant. P.S. Polar bear kills British boy in Arctic (5 Aug 2011 in Svalbard, actually! How "ironic") A polar bear has mauled a 17-year-old British boy to death in the Arctic and injured four other UK tourists. I wonder if it is one of those 'adopted' by the well-meaning WWF supporters? www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-14415592
