"could be on a rainy morning, could be on a rainy night, Stagolee and Billy Delight (actually it's Billy de Lyon but i always heard it as billy delight) had a great big fight. talking 'bout the bad man, cruel old Stagolee
Stagger Lee shot Billy Shot the boy so bad The bullet went through Billy broke the bartender's looking glass.."
just noticed a great song mentioned on another board so thought i would introduce it here while its still fresh. with so many renditions, it deserves its own thead i though. each time i hear any of the many versions i listen out to see how the story differs according to whoever sings it. its a murder ~ Stag o Lee, Stacker Lee, Stagger Lee, he shoots Billy de Lyon. sometimes its a bar room brawl, or could be an argument over a card game, a $5 stetson hat, a woman.
hard to tell which one i like best, having first heard it as a teenager ('giant step' album by Taj Mahal}. my preference chops and changes - although to date i reckon it is Mississippi John Hurt's, followed by Taj Mahal's. being a popular blues folk song its been done by an awful lot of people so i'm going to pin them up here.
