I see men are still unable to function properly or take responsibility for themselves until they find a substitue mum to do the hoovering Honestly, I wonder why we women allow it!

It boils down to economics. Too expensive to live independently for some today.
Mind you, it was normal 50 years ago to live at home until married.

It might be marginally easier for girls to leave home, if they can find someone with a place to live. That would be harder for boys. I know it happens, though (well, I suppose it does). Though a boy can't get himself pregnant.

It was a lot older than now - mid 20s at least (for middle classes anyway).
There were ways around the lack of housing. HG Wells - for eg - worked in a shop, and lived there as well - as did a lot of the workers - in a room shared with 3-4 others. They had to be back by 10.30pm else they were fired.
