Yes, I think so. And Clarkson can't have been unaware of the consternation caused by Evans's recent and much more spontaneous example. This was conscious mischief-making. you cant possibly know that. make a guess by all means. and, it is quite possible jeremy clarkson had no idea about the chris evans remark. why should he?

You're right, pippa - I can't know what motivates Jeremy Clarkson any more than I can know what's in the mind of the Pakistani immigrant to this country.

Yes I think there is a difference. I said earlier I think that Jeremy Clarkson can be compared to Jim davidson because he too has form. Jeremy Clarkson is championed (by some) as the "bad boy" of TV and I suppose "not afraid to speak his mind" and "one in the eye" for freedom of speech and bollocks to the PC crowd etc. etc. Which tiresomely translates into childishly making fun of people who are not exactly like him. Yes, he has a long history of this kind of thing. Recently there was the mexican thing. Steve Coogan in this brilliant piece* in the Guardian critiques that episode better than I could ever. I agree with every word. Clarkson is a bully and like most bullies a coward too. Evans I think would probably have made the same off the cuff remark if the prof had been white. Of course nobody would have picked it up then. Moral? Try to think very carefully about your language to avoid the risk of offending people even inadvertantly. On live telly when you have to gob off constantly perhaps that's not so easy. (think Richard Madeley). * www.guardian.co.uk/tv-and-radio/2011/feb/05/top-gear-offensive-steve-coogan[edited to make your link work as a link]

I like Jeremy Clarkson because I share his attitude to political correctness. I'm not surprised the PC brigade plus assorted feminists get in a hissy fit over his outspoken remarks. You actually DESERVE a man like Clarkson to remind you what its like outside your PC ghetto!
He defended Carol Thatcher over the golliwog affair (re Gael Monfils) a couple of years ago. Good for him! That was another storm in a teacup. Seems "multiculture rules" except when it comes up against PC - the new orthodoxy of the chattering classes.
Jeremy Clarkson is well-liked for reasons you lot are totally incapable of appreciating. Whatever happened to your common purpose diversity training and tolerance of ambiguity?

I don't think the Clarkson remark is a big deal for the same reason I don't think the Evans remark is. At the same time, intent is always an issue. If Clarkson intends to appear obnoxious when he makes such comments...

Clarkson should have known better, I think that goes without saying. But racist?
I remember a lad in school whose nickname was 'Lightbulb' because he had a shock of blond hair. I wonder if it would have been 'hairist' to make a crack about a TV being so bright that every programme looks like it is being presented by Lightbulb on the sun. Or something.

Clarkson should have known better, I think that goes without saying. But racist? Mischief-making was my suggestion. Pippa says that's only a guess on my part, and that is true of course, but it's a guess informed by my knowledge that Jeremy Clarkson...has formand as the marchesa says: I like Jeremy Clarkson because I share his attitude to political correctness. I'm not surprised the PC brigade plus assorted feminists get in a hissy fit over his outspoken remarks. You actually DESERVE a man like Clarkson to remind you what its like outside your PC ghetto! He doesn't achieve that by accident.

Has anyone suggested Clarkson's views (or mine for that matter) ARE accidental? What a peculiar observation to make.
Are your views the result of "accident", jean?
I guess for most people that our expressed views represent our values and the older we get the more those values are the result of long evolution and experience. So, no, definitely not "accidental".

Has anyone suggested Clarkson's views (or mine for that matter) ARE accidental? What a peculiar observation to make. Nobody - least all me - has suggested Clarkson's views are accidental, marchesa. It's his expression of them I'm questioning - and I'm suggesting that the effects his expressing them produce are precisely not 'accidental'. They're quite calculated (IMHO, of course). What I was interested in was the difference between Evans's joke and Clarkson's. I believe that Clarksion intended to be provocative, to upset the PC brigade, in a way that Evans didn't. And I'm pretty sure he was aware of the furore Evans had (probably unintentionally) already stirred up. What do you think?

No wonder nobody gives a flying fuck about anything you post. I always care about his posts. Always and without fail. And the point he makes is blindingly clear, no?

Thanks Jade. Mischief-making was my suggestion. I agree with that. I think he must have known that his statement would be the kind of thing that would cause a sharp intake of breath amongst many. I started a thread on this in The Bull and some people are absolutely adamant that it was racist.
